Cybersecurity Education Platform: Democratizing Security Education

Problem/Data Domain

Cybersecurity awareness represents a critical challenge in our increasingly digital world, where individuals and organizations face constant threats from phishing attacks, malware, social engineering, and data breaches. Despite the growing sophistication of cyber threats, many people lack fundamental knowledge about online safety practices, password security, and recognizing common attack vectors. According to the 2023 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 74% of breaches involve human error, highlighting a significant gap in cybersecurity literacy across all demographics. This knowledge deficit affects everyone from students and remote workers to small business owners, making cybersecurity education not just a technical issue but a social imperative.

The information technology problem in this space is the lack of accessible, engaging, and personalized tools for both delivering and assessing cybersecurity knowledge. While corporate training programs exist, they're often expensive and inaccessible to individual learners. Educational resources are frequently static and don't provide interactive ways to test comprehension or track improvement over time. Existing solutions like KnowBe4 and SANS Security Awareness focus primarily on enterprise clients with subscription models, while free resources like Google's Phishing Quiz or the National Cyber Security Centre's online materials offer limited interactivity and no community-driven content creation. There's a gap for a platform that democratizes both the creation and consumption of cybersecurity knowledge—allowing security professionals, educators, or experienced users to share their expertise through custom quizzes while enabling learners to assess their vulnerabilities and track their progress through competitive scoring and ranking systems.

App Description

By: Chuantong Yang, Visar Krasniqi

This application will help people who are unable to access informational spaces regarding cybersecurity terminology and concepts. More specifically, it aims to help students study for certifications such as the CompTIA Security+ while also forming groups that can lead to lasting connections within the cybersecurity community, providing opportunities for mentorship and career growth.

In this app, people will be able to:

The resources recommended by the app will include videos, articles, and textbooks curated by experts in the field. Examples include the Professor Messer Security+ Course, a highly rated collection of free videos that cover all the topics needed to pass the Security+ exam, and the CompTIA Security+ Study Guide, a comprehensive textbook covering the same material.

The app aims to:

Interactive Features

To make learning engaging and collaborative, the platform will include several interactive components designed to motivate users and personalize their educational journey:

User Audience

The platform is designed for a diverse audience that includes:

Impact

The Cybersecurity Education Platform has the potential to transform how cybersecurity knowledge is shared and practiced. By removing financial and institutional barriers, it empowers individuals worldwide to learn, teach, and collaborate on equal footing.

In the short term, the platform will increase cybersecurity literacy and confidence among students and self-learners. Over time, it can contribute to reducing the number of human-error-based breaches by making safe digital behavior part of everyday practice. The community-driven approach ensures continuous improvement, as learners and experts collectively expand and refine the educational content.

Ultimately, this project aims to make cybersecurity awareness not an elite skill, but a universal competency accessible to all.
